@mybinderteam is nice, but unlike @CodeOceanHQ or @GoogleColab it doesn't allow code to be run on a GPU.

Yup! I totally forgot about that. @CodeOceanHQ allows us to run cpu gpu codes on their platform. Something desperately needed in machine learning if done correctly. You cannot do any scalability studies on it but can show that gpu code runs and produces a valid o/p for given data

Seems like there's some work to allow for binder to create containers with GPU support. https://github.com/betatim/basic-gpu-binder … I think I might look at both options and compare perf. @betatim can you shed some light on this?

note that there's a big difference here, which is that http://mybinder.org  is simply a public deployment of BinderHub, which is FOSS and community-driven (stewarded by the Binder Project which is part of Jupyter). You can deploy your own BinderHub on whatever cloud you like

(as opposed to those two projects, which are primarily commercial services. there is no way to pay for http://mybinder.org , it's just a public service the project runs in order to highlight the tech)

but, re: GPU we had a demo binderhub running on a Google Cloud cluster w/ GPUs on it for #NeurIPS2018 this year :-)

The demo was...a demo. If you plan to deploy it publicly, great, otherwise it doesn't change the fact that you can't run GPU code on https://mybinder.org/ . Let's not bash a free service only b/c it's owned by a private company: @googlecolab is free (I wouldn't even know how 1/

It's worth pointing out capsules created on Code Ocean can be exported and run locally/on cluster using Docker and/or Binder. Our goal for the platform is a streamlined experience without sacrificing interoperability. Published capsules get a DOI and preserved with CLOCKSS
