      I am sympathetic to these arguments; however, the code an industry researcher writes belongs to their employer, not to them. Employers are incentivized to keep code internal if it is business critical or exposes IP (patentability). 1/

      They don't need to publish papers, then. Some in industry want to have it both ways: academic prestige AND monetary value of patents, proprietary, etc. They're welcome to WANT it, but no reason we have to play along with the double-dipping. »

      Or, create two tracks: "science" track (with checked artifacts: https://www.artifact-eval.org/ ), some other name for the other track. Reviewers will hold comparison to "science" papers to higher standard. Validity of work in other track is far harder to tell. »

      I'm biased, but artifact evaluation is working pretty well in numerous conferences. We've even got ACM standards in place. Not the same as what @AnimaAnandkumar is pushing for but related and a useful precedent that the world doesn't collapse and the community figures it out...

          Sadly no. Artifact Evaluation had to grow organically in light of community concerns/pushback, so it was forced to be an optional protocol. Uptake has varied across communities; some participate enthusiastically, others (ahem software engineering ahem) can be laggards.
