1) A male researcher junior to me treated me with respect. I was shocked to hear that he made women who were junior to him uncomfortable. He would get drunk and joke about their looks at conferences. I believed them. It is not about sex. It is about power.

I am curious about how much culture mix plays into these behaviors? Or maybe not at all? It doesn’t appear to be only a generational effect (while not an excuse maybe less surprising). How much is male insecurity around smarter stronger females?, etc...

Irish Mums don't tolerate crap and I was taught respect and equality by my Mum as well as how to cook, clean & fend for myself. Do misogynists mothers not bear 50% responsibility for raising their sons or are you referring to a particular demographic?

I really think that before parents (not only mothers btw!! as that doesn’t seem to be enough) teaches their sons to have respect for & value women this behavior will not change. Society needs to be in on it as well. Culture needs to change. But it starts with parenting imo.

Not to absolve fathers of responsibility (they already have too much negative influence it would seem) but in my own experience women as mothers are in a unique position to effect change and we need to empower them to do so. Respect begins at home!

I m not sure it is (only) about power. At least not as root cause. It is about lack of respect (for others, women in particular and maybe also for oneself). The shadow of a leader (parents, teachers, superiors) is important in dealing with these behavioral challenges.

To me, the real question is whether his behavior will change and whether the change will stick.

Hard to say, but at least there is a deterrent. He knows women can come to me and to others to complain about bad behavior
