Our paper accepted to #ICLR2019 on SignSGD: communication efficient and Byzantine fault tolerant. Compressing gradients to just signs has nearly no loss in accuracy. Our theory has bounds on convergence rate + Byzantine tolerance. @PyTorch code shows gains in throughput.https://twitter.com/kazizzad/status/1078425796161597440 …

Doesn't surprise me these techniques work. I did on adaptive filters in the 90s. Sign LMS adaptive filters work just fine, indeed so does sign-sign LMS LMS filtering including sign LMS has been around since the 1960 when Widrow invented the technique in Stanford

Didn't surprise me either, the idea about my "back sign signal propagation" was to try out a biologically plausible mechanisms of learning.

Please read the paper in detail. Theory is novel. Until now there was no convergence rate bounds for gradient quantization without any corrections.

LMS is a special case of Gradient Descent and the sign-LMS variant has been around for decades and used for training NNs in 90s if not earlier [Hassibi]

Indeed. Babak hassibi is aware of our work. There has been a lot of early work in other communities.
