I think that any name close to the current one will mean that we will continue to use the old name. We should just start fresh
I suspect the hold-up is that any name so far from the original might decimate the book-keeping and impact-factor tracking that rightly or wrongly play a serious role in dictating people's careers at many universities.
To be clear, I hear your point and agree it's a perfectly reasonable concern. Honestly I don't know (or even know how to estimate) how uniformly people would adopt a new name conversationally (both if it were close or if distant).
