A student from a top #ml program wrote how a senior male professor (likely her advisor) is strongly against name change and has told entire lab to not engage in #protestNIPS the non-change is about holding on to power and patriarchy

@mxlearn and@reddit attract worst behavior. I will never engage there. Most women stay away. I am called the worst names for starting#ProtestNIPS. Visceral rage that these men possess saddens me. Wish they had better support groups/therapy. Need to teach men emotional health1 reply 2 retweets 32 likesShow this thread -
For those defending
@NipsConference in name of tradition, I couldn't be more proud of it. Not many know that it started at@Caltech Name didn't bother me until infusion of#broculture into#ai#ml Sending a strong message to them is criticalhttp://m.caltech.edu/news/caltech-celebrates-30-years-its-computation-and-neural-systems-option-79528 …1 reply 8 retweets 34 likesShow this thread -
The name change fiasco by
@NipsConference is part of a deeper problem. It is run like a dictatorship with no elections, no townhall, no transparency. Can't think of any other major conference run this way.#ai#ml deserves better.#ProtestNIPS2 replies 12 retweets 58 likesShow this thread -
Bullying and trolling for just speaking up about
@NipsConference name change is shameful. I can speak up, but still feel emotionally exhausted. Others are less fortunate. A couple of emails on how bullying continues. shutting down#ProtestNIPS is to maintain status quo and powerpic.twitter.com/oGGoxew5nx

I am going to post some of the garbage in
@mxlearn to give everyone an idea of what women have to go through just to stay in#ml#ai#ProtestNIPS In the post below, our hero laments that rape apologists can no longer continue to work in linux communities.#takehatespeechdownpic.twitter.com/CMBojTXTgN

As expected these anonymous cowards on @mxlearn http://dlvr.it/QpQ5dy turn to personal attacks. No wonder women stay away from @mxlearn or anywhere online and don't voice their true opinions. Truly disappointed how horrible this world is for womenpic.twitter.com/dkfHusEPNp

Replying to @AnimaAnandkumar @mxlearn
That reddit comment is incredibly naïve and fixated on character assassination. Imagine if its author had the capacity to take their head out of their
and empathize with others, and realize that everything is political — science included.1 reply 0 retweets 3 likes -
Well, lack of knowledge about the historical forces in the history of science does lead to an ignorance of the issues the modern scientific community faces. It is very hard for ignorant people to see the biases in the scientific culture unless they look at history holistically.
