I have blocked tens of trolls today. most obvious ones spew misogynistic hatred. others clothe it as a honest argument and will veer off in usual directions : men have nipples too (yeah dude and whose are objectified and made fun of) it is just a name (so let's change it!) blah.

The 'gun-toting bro' situation doesn't exactly seem to be about the name 'NIPS' per se. It might just be a sexist (in general) dude feeling insecure and annoyed by what he might think is a charade. It could have happened over any other acronym.
Definitely need to change the name, NIPS is comically poor choice for a conference name. But anyone whose first reaction to hearing about a "NIPS conference" is to make a sexist comment is just a sexist person. Wouldn't fault the name for that. #ProtestNIPS
