Ignoring the issue was bad enough. Now they have recognized the problem, but still won't take any step to fix it?

The year is 2016, Washington Post conducts a poll in DC/MD/VA to ask whether people support changing the name of Washington Reds***s and the results - people didn't support a name change. Turns out, the polling sample was heavily skewed. 1/3

For the team, it should've been about what's right and what's not, and not about a poll. They never wanted a change and used this poll as defense. Turns out someone who did poll native americans (while verifying each person's identity) found the opposite 2/3

Why would someone do a partial search? Rather than searching NIPS in Google Image, search NIPS Conference in Google Image. @NipsConference

Did you even read the petition? It goes into details of how this slang is being used in a derogatory manner (ill humoured t-shirts, an event called TITS). It's not a siloed or isolated issue to *just* images.

The name is unfortunate, and I agree with your points in the change petition. But could there be a possible contradiction here? If you reject the use of polls for issues of bias, then what purpose will the change petition serve? 1/2

In a way it’s just another poll with only one opinion represented. To me, a reasonable remedy may be implementing your proposed changes to the original study. Curious to learn if others have better ideas. 2/2

Signed. Look I’m a nobody in this community but I think the name makes a lot of people uncomfortable and we should strive to be inclusive. This is easy and shouldn’t be controversial.

Nips is also a racial slur against those of Japanese descent. Even if a little outdated now. This aspect was what I initially found uncomfortable about the name. We each have our particular cultural blindness, so I suggest you add reference to this as well. I signed, btw!
