I have blocked tens of trolls today. most obvious ones spew misogynistic hatred. others clothe it as a honest argument and will veer off in usual directions : men have nipples too (yeah dude and whose are objectified and made fun of) it is just a name (so let's change it!) blah.
A student from a top #ml program wrote how a senior male professor (likely her advisor) is strongly against name change and has told entire lab to not engage in #protestNIPS the non-change is about holding on to power and patriarchy
Couple of ideas:
1. What about wearing an armband of a particular color?
2. Tweeting events during the conference using #ProtestNIPS.
I'd say go beyond protesting and get your organization to sign off on a mass statement! I'm so proud of the @JohnsHopkins machine learning community for doing so and the impact it had on getting the conversation started with the @NipsConference board.
Can you send the link to this? Also, are entire groups signing or only individuals?
If the machine learning community is serious about this, then just don't go to this conference and instead start a new one. That's the real protest!
have you guys seen the stats that resulted in the decision? around 50% of the females who were asked about changing the name said no to changing it.
