Considering the majority vote when the minorities are mainly affected doesn't sound right to me! @NipsConference

I don't think this is the process that the NIPS board followed. If you look at just the women, there is not a strong signal.

I see a strong signal, looking at just the women: nearly 50% are negatively impacted. It seems clear to me a major impact on the minority (exclusion) should be weighed more heavily than a minor impact on the majority (inconvenience).

You can't infer that because someone voted in favor of a change that they were personally impacted. Look at how many men voted in favor of a change.

Although I was in favor of a change, I think @NipsConference is doing the right thing by redoubling its efforts to create substantial and long-lasting change in the conference and the community rather than making a symbolic name-change gesture.

And changing name of @NipsConference is not merely symbolic. It will prevent at least one avenue of making terrible sexist jokes. It is sad how you don't see how badly it affects the women attending the conference

It never occurred to me but this is the result if you search for nips. Similar results appear on Twitter too. We need to accept that this is bizarre! Also, I really don't understand what is wrong with changing the name. How does it objectively hurt the community?pic.twitter.com/VKq9kemUC9
