Another thing not to do: avoiding women at conferences. Early in my career, my advisor would introduce me. One professor cut me off as I started to explain my research and introduced me to his female student and remarked that since we are both women we would connect better :(
What an idiot...
The saddest part is that I saw this is common! When I saw young female students grouping together at conferences and only talking among themselves or with female PIs, it took me a while to realize they were actually being shut down by the male PIs.
