Equally annoying are the people screaming "abolish ICE" like it won't just get replaced by an agency that does the same damn thing. The INS sucked, too, folks.

INS sucked a lot less than ICE. ICE has turned into this huge paramilitary Gestapo charged with pulling people out of their homes, illegally searching and detaining them, denying them due process and transparent court proceedings.

Many of us were concerned at the time about putting immigration under homeland security (it used to be considered a labor issue). That arrangement alone demonizes immigrants as a security threat, when the vast majority of them are seeking safety and/or economic opportunity.

More broadly, many of us knew that the USA Patriot Act, and all of the other post-9/11 legislation and bureaucratic shuffling of agencies, posed a potential for abuse in the wrong hands. The ground was set back then for a strong-arm dictator to abuse that security apparatus.
