There is the effect on Ireland to consider. It was overpopulated but small enough that emigration was an effective remedy. But was it largely the talented & ambitious who emigrated? What was the effect of that? One thing seems likely: it gave a death blow to the Irish language.

My current sense is that each wave of immigration was too soon, Irish might have been ok had it happened some amount of time later (20yrs? 50yrs? not sure) and at a lower rate.
