I'm close to completely uninterested in his identity, but "compare the writing" type algorithms strike me as impossible.

Why so? I have no expertise, but mapping a written fingerprint (within some margin of error) seems totally doable in theory.

Plausible. But validating accuracy with some out-of-sample experimenting would be pretty easy if you had one of these tools in your hands.

My only firsthand (secondhand, tbh) experience is with voice ID, which was terrible at the time.
