..Prior to 62, the type that would have had a go at it would have been taught German.
Being & Time wasn't translated into English until 1962, & I doubt that translation actually increases the number of ppl actually reading it.

My German isn't nearly good enough, but apparently Heidegger is much easier to read in his native tongue (unlike, say, Kant).

Heidegger's terminology--Dasein, Lichtung, Vorhandheit, Mitsein, &c--sounds much more natural in German.
