What's wrong with McCloskey? Mokyr nails it http://search.proquest.com/docview/1860269663 …pic.twitter.com/NlZiqKSdpv

It's an odd omission given that scientific pursuit & exchange could be easily rolled into her changing hierarchy of values thesis.

you could call it "intellectual virtue" -- but her problem would be that maybe intellectual virtue isn't a *bourgeois* virtue

I do think that the sci rev required ppl to value experiment, discovery, facts more than they had previously

maybe these are the bourgeois versions of the philosophical virtues

Right. If you frame it as the marketplace of ideas, it nests quite nicely in her work.

The causal question of why bougie virtues sprang up is an interesting one.. do you think Mokyr's political fragmentation applies?

There's an alternative version of her hypothesis where natural scientists make use of advances in"practical science"

For example, Leewenhoek and Galileo both benefit from advances in glass production, shaping of lenses, etc.

Similarly, Descartes or Newton are difficult to imagine without the precipitous drop in the cost of books, etc.

By the 19th Century, difficult to imagine much engineering progress that doesn't depend partially on "pure science"

But I think it's fair to say that up to that point, direction of benefit was as much "business->science" as visa versa

It sounds like she's making sillier version of argument, but she often has problem of burying good arguments in bad 1s
