This Memorial Day we remember the lives of fallen soldiers and the true cost of war. We also pay tribute to the former slaves of Charleston, SC who began the tradition of remembering fallen soldiers in 1865 when they honored 257 fallen Union soldiers buried in a mass grave.

Originally known as Decoration Day, this practice gave communities across the country a way to grieve their losses after war. May our current and future administrations always remember what they ask of our soldiers and their loved ones.
