I’m officially a 3rd year PhD student! 🎉 No idea how this happened so fast 😭 but here are my top 5 best tips to incoming grad students: 1) Find your community. Those who relate with similar goals/backgrounds, and can support you with kindness, advice, or a mental break. (1/5)

Ramadan this year falls between April 23 and May 23, which means it may very well coincide with your final exam. Now that you know the dates, how do you plan to help your students who may be fasting? I will offer an alternative time to students so that they can eat before.

Dear Educators, Black girls are not loud - they want to be heard. Black girls are not seeking-attention - they are seeking a connection. Black girls are not aggressive - they know what they want. Black girls are not bossy - they are leaders. Last, Black girls are not adults.

So much of my grad school experience has been DEFINED by my relationship with my advisor. I love science, but I wouldn't have been been able to survive any of this pressure had it not been for the constant support, encouragement and compassion I receive from my lab.

As grad school interviews start, remember YOU’RE interviewing the school/dept/PIs too! & while the research is important so is the mentoring! Having a great mentor makes a HUGE difference in your success & mental health. Choose wisely 💛

THANK YOU so much for the advice everyone! Met w/ another counselor yesterday-MUCH more helpful & talked to my PI I was terrified to admit I can’t do everything right now. But she was super supportive & I feel better. The funeral is tomorrow so hopefully I’ll get some closure ❤️

Advice for dealing w/ grief while in grad school ? I have so much to do (lab, class, TA-ing, recruitment, etc) and I am just so sad right now. But I don’t have time to think about it. I feel like I have to just keep doing the next thing on my to-do list

Take that trip you’re planning. Call that family member you haven’t spoken to in years. 5 year, 10 year, 20 year plans. They all sound nice. But what if you’re not here that long ? What would you do differently today if you know you won’t be here tomorrow?
