Ask them to set an objective for you. It gets around the 'are they saying what they *think* they want you to hear' syndrome, they'll tend to frame it from a personal perspective. You can then use this as a jump off point...and it ensures accountability from you. YMMV obvs :D

Realised earlier that the same management style doesn’t work for everyone. Some need straight talking, others need an arm round their shoulders and encouragement

Find out what important to them (promotion / praise / money / guidance / family / home working etc) and do what you can to give them that. Let them know you care about that they care about and want to help them succeed.

^ 100% this. Don't assume everyone wants the same as you (for example in terms of career path). Also, give them the tools to do the job but don't take them by the hand, let them do things their own way
