Male authors boost research impact through self-hyping studies: Sensationalistic terms in titles or abstracts of articles produce more citations than do articles without such words — and men are more likely to use them.

  5. At every single step of my career I have felt the critical gaze of people not quite believing I can do my job, of taking extra time to trust me, and not being sure if that’s because I’m a woman, or brown, or both. That’s how discrimination feels. Subtle, constant, undermining.

"I don't think anyone wants a hand out or preferential treatment, although that's what we give ourselves every year. ...It is the obligation of the people that have created & perpetuate & benefit from a system of opression to be the ones that dismantle it. So...that's on us."

Our February is “Superior: The Return of Race Science” by Angela Saini. Critics claim "Superior is nothing short of a remarkable, brilliant, and erudite exploration of what we believe about the racialized differences among our human bodies." Come check it out at UAC 478!

Disgusting. Racism and xenophobia have always been the nasty bedfellows of disease. You’d think, in the 21st century, we might’ve moved beyond it.

I hear that the infamous Charles Murray, co-author of the widely-discredited The Bell Curve, has a new book out soon on race, gender and class. Indeed, he's already expressed concern that I might read and review it. Fortunately, I got my rebuttals in good and early!

  19. I’ve seen for myself a breathtaking arrogance among some scientists who imagine that sexism and racism exist in other people, not them. Well, actually, we all have bias because that’s what living in this world does to you. Imagining otherwise ensures only that nothing changes.

  20. If scientists can’t see the need to incorporate ethics and the humanities into their teaching, they will perpetuate bias and error. We have to recognise that prejudice exists in all of us and the only way to prevent it from affecting our work is to understand it.
