The antagonist of the early variations of 'Little Red Riding Hood' is not always a wolf, but sometimes an ogre, vampire, or a 'bzou' (werewolf), making these tales relevant to the werewolf trials (similar to witch trials) of the time

I found myself in the literary carriage on my commute this morning. The chap opposite was reading Ali Smith’s Winter and the woman next to me was reading Graham Greene’s The Honorary Consul. I was shuffling through Edmund Gordon’s biography of Angela Carter. Hurrah for books!

#4&5 for : Mary Shelley, author of Frankenstein (largely considered the first sci-fi novel) and bonafide goth QUEEN Angela Carter, author of The Bloody Chamber.

Here’s the link if anyone else would like one... ‘Sometimes he lays his head on my lap and lets me comb his lovely hair for him; his combings are leaves of every tree in the wood and dryly susurrate around my feet.’ ~ The Erl King, Angela Carter.

"Joyce Irished, he Europeanised, he decolonialised English: he tailored it to fit this century, he drove a giant wedge between English Literature and literature in the English language and, in doing so, he made me free" (Angela Carter). Happy birthday to 1882

"I do believe that, had Joyce opted for a career as a singer [...] I, for one, as a writer in post-imperialist Britain, would not even have had the possibility of a language" (Angela Carter). James Joyce's published in 1922 by

“The English wood is nothing like the dark, necromantic forest in which the Northern European imagination begins and ends.... Since the last English wolf was killed there is nothing savage among the trees to terrify you.... this wood is kind to lovers.” — Angela Carter

Quote from Angela Carter's The Bloody Chamber: "I saw how much that cruel necklace became me. And, for the first time in my innocent and confined life, I sensed in myself a potentiality for corruption that took my breath away."

"I wonder if [Angela Carter] would have written more work for the movies." Oh how I wish Carter could have written more screenplays! Her work is so cinematic that it's shame we have never seen more of it on the big screen.
