Unlike many cities, NYC allows the police to deploy surveillance tools without oversight or accountability from the City Council. A new chart tracks the scope & impact of NYPD’s expansive surveillance arsenal. Here’s what’s at stake:

“No government, UN agency, or nongovernmental organization has systematically monitored what happens to deported persons once back in El Salvador. This report begins to fill that gap.”

Interesting complaints about the nature of surveillance by police who regularly use surveillance.

We filed public records requests w/ Baltimore, LA, Boston, & New York City, asking about their police departments' use of social media monitoring - not just third party tools, but also individual & hashtag tracking, undercover accounts, & more.

And again, the people deciding that an incident has "significant merit" doesn't have to explain itself and is actively courting support from police departments.

The legal word salad that's meant to look like a limitation on this really translates to "just ask." Almost any request could lead "to a more thorough follow up investigation" *or* "provide additional information to develop and (sic) understanding of the incident."

It doesn't even have to be something as strong as a warrant; Ring could turn over your data whenever it gets a simple subpoena. And if "there is an emergency involving danger of death or serious injury," just a simple ask will do. Who decides? Not you.

We put together an overview of the NYPD's surveillance tools here, but our work can't be a substitute for meaningful oversight and accountability from the City Council.

This is a police department that we know has a history of acting in ways that have a disproportionate impact on communities of color and individuals of color in New York. - We can't wait any longer to pass the . via

Looks like the Santa Cruz police have given up on PredPol, software that claims to predict where future crimes will occur. SCPD haven't used PredPol software in the past year and their police chief recently sent an email saying "Please do not use PredPol anymore."

“When ICE says that they use this technology only for criminal investigations they want us to think of someone dangerous. But something as simple as re-entering the country after a previous deportation is enough to use the technology.” -

The 's on ICE's extremely selective release of info about their use of Stingrays for immigration enforcement: the public is "stuck with their account without any proof of what they're claiming, without any documentation."

Turning people’s homes into little domain awareness systems raises all kinds of new legal voids. Regulatory solutions need to incorporate this reality into their proposals.
