We only started treating them like children during the 80s. Until then 15 yr olds helped around the house, got part time jobs. Now - they play fortnite.https://www.breitbart.com/politics/2018/10/30/mexican-ambassador-u-s-some-migrant-caravan-very-violent/ …

The FLSA regulated work by children under 16 starting in 1938.

Regulated, sure, but the idea that teenagers were not perceived as criminal threats or otherwise engaged in "man" things isn't so.pic.twitter.com/xLZkZHMXnn

Since the usual suspicion is "black and Hispanic kids are viewed as threatening adults from the time they hit puberty whereas if you look like Donald Trump Jr or Jared Kushner you're still a 'good boy' entitled to the benefit of the doubt at 40," this picture is... awkward.

I acknowledge the different dimensions of privilege in play here (though I don't think anyone's main fear of Kushner is that he's a potential violent offender!) Violence is a young man's thing, and by the time you're in your 30s or 40s you're probably less of a risk than at 16.

There is the common theme of "children" and "boys" being labeled to avoid judgement long after this is appropriate.
