This is a pathetic attempt to shift the blame for Tory fares policies onto the staff who run the railway. It's telling that Grayling doesn't suggest slashing the salaries of train company bosses or dividends paid to shareholders of private train companies.https://www.mirror.co.uk/news/politics/shameless-tory-chris-grayling-blames-13802247?utm_source=twitter.com&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=sharebar …

How is Grayling still in office - a true Kind Midas in reverse - everything he touches goes wrong- zero transparency or honesty & demonstrates the focus & real motivation of his shambolic party - serving vested self interest #seabourne scandal latest farce on his watch.pic.twitter.com/Ci4MuBYUkW

He’s organising a dummy run with 150 lorries with regards to possible congestion. That won’t tell them anything. Try 5,000 ? The Tailbacks will be further than the eye can see!!! The outcome total utter chaos. He should be sacked with immediate effect, P45 in the post !!!!

You can tell when Grayling had screwed up. He comes on TV and smirks as he lies about his role in the screw up. It’s never his fault, and always the little smirk.

Is £141,505 salary plus expenses Chris Failing Grayling really trying to blame workers' pay for the mess the railways have been plunged into by his government's obsession with private profit? #shamefulGrayling

And Mick Whelan, General Secretary of ASLEF, is reported as earning £117,595, no doubt plus expenses. That's not a bad pay grade either.

Not quite, paid for by the tax payer and held accountable only to his leader it would seem.

Of course he's paid by us (the taxpayers), but he's also held accountable by parliament, by his constituents, &, more widely, by the voters who elected his party into office. BTW How long is Mick Whelan's term of office? He's been Gen Sec for 7 years now. Is he into a 2nd term?

Parliament can ask questions but is powerless to stop him cocking up time and again. His constituency has only ever been Tory, pig and a rosette comes to mind (if only, we may have been spared some of his disasters). Aslef GS term is 5 years, re-elected unopposed in 2016.

A general election would have been one way of holding not just Grayling, but the whole government to account. The trouble is that Labour lost the last one. You say Mick Whelan was re-elected unopposed. That certainly doesn't sound like holding him to account. Pig & rosette? 🤔

Yes the rail company bosses are greedy and paid too much. When was it ok thought to pay train drivers over £50k a year? The staff costs are a huge cost to the companies and this is another reason train fares are too high.

Train drivers are responsible for the safety of hundreds of people travelling at high speed- they should be well paid.

Don't disagree they should be paid a decent wage but £50k is too much. There are 1000s of people with more responsible jobs who don't get anywhere near that salary. If you say they are worth £50k then you are saying they are worth more than nurses, Police officers and fireman.

The demand should be for those people to be paid more, not others to be paid less. Unless you fully understand the role, then how can you decide what the salary should be?

Correct. It's a race to the bottom with Stephen. People are not saying drivers are better than nurses, police. People should all be paid a good wage . Not just a wave to survive!!!

I'm sure the Tories would like nothing more than everyone else to be paid less than our wonderful services with their pitiful 1% rises, the question should be why are those people so poorly paid and the answer certainly isn't anything to do with train drivers.
