This is an important bill. Saving lives is more important than arresting people with substance use disorders. Looking forward to seeing the House pass it so can sign it.

Virginia risks passing laws and calling them decriminalization of marijuana. But they will lead to the same disproportionate justice with Black people being fined and their lives impacted. Read my and thoughts in the

That’s my delegate! Thank you for taking this stand. Virginia, the best way to deal with wrongful convictions is to ensure they never happen. HB 873 (discovery), HB 824 (expert funding), and HB 100 (voir dire) all protect the right to a fair trial.

Virginians shouldn't lose their driver's licenses just because they can't pay their court costs. Glad the Virginia Senate voted unanimously to permanently end this practice. Let's stop criminalizing poverty.

The Senate just approved my bill to bring a public defender office to Prince William County. This legislation will improve access to justice in our community.

We are here to send a strong message to all VA lawmakers that racial justice and policing reform must be at the center of any marijuana legislation. That means supporting 's HB 1507 & rejecting 's HB 972.

Expungement needs to be more broadly available, and the process needs to be substantially streamlined. Those are big reforms. But small-bore reforms like this one are no-brainers. The House of delegates should take up this bill and pass it. Virginians need this reform *now*. 4/4

The fact is that many people did these programs to keep their records clean, only to later find out that employers could still see that they had once been arrested. This is an injustice that needs correction. 3/4

When I was in private practice, people would routinely call, looking for expungements in these cases. They were shocked to learn that they would never be able to remove their charges for their records, despite successfully completing a first offender program. 2/4

This is a vital bill. For years, people charged with MJ have entered into these programs, without lawyers. Most believe their records would be clean if they did so. Years later, they learn that their arrests still show on their records and that they can’t expunge the charges. 1/4

This thread is instructive - small policy changes can have a big impact on how indigent clients see their cases. This is a necessary fix that will make our justice system more fair and equitable.

Virginia takes another historic step, joining New Jersey, Colorado, and Washington, to put an end this inhumane practice that amounts to torture.
