Citing the work of others, especially indicating that the work is a preprint, doesn’t detract from your own, because your reference section isn’t some sort of score card, it’s how you provide context for your ideas and findings.

A few years ago, I posted on , asking if there's a way to convert an image of a chemical structure (e.g. in a paper) to SMILES or something ChemDraw-friendly. There's an answer! "OSRA: Optical Structure Recognition Application"

I study teaching and learning in higher education. From all the research (and practice) I've done, I think what it comes down to is this: the most important thing for teaching is actually caring about the students and their learning.

I need to provide my transcript to stay a fellow, but I can't access my transcript until they pay my tuition. Hmmm...! , this is unacceptable. Can't register. Can't access my academic records. We need a fix now.

Hey , I have ordered a chemical from and it arrived with “cards for organic framwork chemicals”. These are awesome. I should bring them to annual meetings in case you guys want to play a game during the break!

I have to say: the "crap"-doping of graphene and the JACS Au bonanza really seems to have united the chem Twitter community this past week! JACS Au: It's about the friends we made along the way.

As a field, we aren't necessarily great at trying to reject alternate hypotheses. My opinion is that we should focus more energy in that direction (working together to do so!) rather than turn it into a scavenger hunt game.

People do this shit all the time. That type of interaction is demeaning to theorists, you don't talk like that to experimentalists - what if you told us your terminal outcome and it was you that had the analysis wrong? Saves a major waste of time. We aren't technicians.

If you're concerned about confirmation bias, discuss that with your collaborators instead of hiding the key results. It's a collaboration! Work together to explore alternatives. Kind of demeaning to the folks, unless this setup is agreed upon as part of the study.

Seocnding 's take. Yeah, don't do this. The best results will be one where both parties know as much as possible about the system. Besides, if you're looking for theory to simply validate the result you're already confident in, you're not asking the right questions.

"Using Collective Knowledge to Assign Oxidation States" by and coworkers recently posted on . Very cool!!! I'm looking forward to reading it more closely and trying out the code (lots of open-source goodness here!).

Will NDSEG pay for $38,000 of my tuition/fees they've been neglecting since Fall '17 by the 5pm deadline today where NU threatens to remove students from the graduate school? Tune in next week for an answer that is certainly going to be "no, they won't". Ah, the government...
