Excited to share preprint of our article on optimising network modelling methods for fMRI. We have run more than 6000 assorted pipelines on total of ∼14000 individuals to determine the most optimum pipeline for you, check it out here:

Predictive Routing: "There are no special error-detection circuits or mechanisms." There are instead pathways that are gated by predictions and thus can be activated by unexpected inputs. Amazing monkey electrophysiology work by Andre Bastos

An important limitation is the computational expense of estimating the new PC. Code: Thanks to our Editor and fantastic reviewers!

We also applied our new PC to the nervous system of C. elegans and fMRI brain networks. Classic PC appeared to underestimate the participation of some neurons and brain regions comprising larger modules.

We applied our new PC to an airline network. Known hubs such as Heathrow, LAX and JFK were among the top-10 PC airports, but this was not the case for classic PC. Classic PC was highest for airports in South America (small module).

We developed a normalized version of PC to eliminate the influence of module size on PC. The basic idea is to benchmark intra-modular degree using Maslov-Sneppen rewired networks. This builds on the dispersion index by Klimm et al:

PC tells us the extent to which a node in a network is connected to (participates with) modules other than its own. Issue is that PC may be influenced by module size: big modules -> low PC, small modules -> high PC. Correlation between size and PC in brain networks shows this:

We developed a new participation coefficient (PC) that explicitly accounts for the influence of module size on PC. Just out in Work led by , together with , and G. Jackson. Well done Mangor!

More on , out in ! We found altered synchronous/antisynchronous resting-state functional connectivity involving 3 main functionally specialized subsystems and preserved structure-function coupling in euthymic BD.

Relevant to situations where neuroimaging-based ML predictions of brain age are directly tested for correlations with cognition and other phenotypes. Related to the RtM bias in brain age prediction:

New bootstrapping method to enable predictions from a machine learning (ML) model to be used in subsequent correlation analysis. Predicted outcomes from a ML model may be less variable than actual outcomes, leading to over-optimistic stats.

Space: a Missing Piece of the Dynamic Puzzle: Here we make the case that most fMRI dynamic connectivity ignores spatial aspects (e.g. moving sources). We also attempt to categorize existing approaches into temporal, spatial, and spatiotemporally dynamic ()

New preprint out: Using a combination of whole-brain connectome/topology and localized tractography approaches, we found that post-stroke depression is associated with microstructural changes in the reward system.
