We are up to $1.5 trillion in school loans up more than 15x from 1999. Default rates are rising and bankruptcy doesn’t give you a way out due to bank lobbying. College has risen in cost 250%. The system has become a crushing burden on many. Something has to be done. I’ll do it.

Some kids go to community college for 2 yrs then transfer. How many people could've taken that route but instead insisted on going to an expensive (and they all are) college all 4 years? Some folk take on debt for very good reasons. But others... not so much.

I was forced to drop out of uni in my 2nd year and go to community college instead because the school raised tuition by 44%. My grants had also gotten revoked because my mother died. I transferred back after finishing comm college and had to take a ton of loans to finish school.

Private or public student loans? There's a big distinction there. Many undergraduates only accrue 12k (at least that was the limit when I went) in public Stafford loans but gigantic private loans.

Start with higher interest rates first so mostly private

Maybe they should of thought about that before signing on the dotted line and then majoring in a useless degree. Like stocks, education is an investment. You screwed up; why am I paying for your mistake? No one forced you to spend $100k to study 17th century Art!

What about people who have sacrificed and went without in order to pay off their student loans? Do we get our money back? Or did we just miss the handout ... i mean forgiveness plan.

They'll just want their mortgages forgiven next. What exactly did they learn in college? This is the biggest indictment of our public education system. Financial illiteracy.
