Incel is not a term I’d heard before this week, so I understand the temptation to treat it as something new. Misogyny, men feeling entitled to women, and violence against women are not new though. If we called coffee “ground up bean water” it wouldn’t taste different

"Incel" is a term that many women working to prevent gender and sexual violence know all too well. We have been ignored, scoffed at, called hysterical, and mansplained about our warnings for years. Welcome to the struggle.

For extra irony, the term "incel" was coined by a bisexual woman from Toronto, but it was appropriated by the MRA/PUA types.https://www.elle.com/culture/news/a34512/woman-who-started-incel-movement/ …

What has changed though is the organization. The interenet has weaponized misogyny on a mass scale by giving misogynists a gathering place.

I'm ..let's say.. 'of a certain age'.. but my daughter's been talking about this for ages. Our kids know. And they're bombarded every day online.

I’m also a woman of a certain age who’s been “incel” for a while. It’s caused zero urge to kill or assault anyone.

I think the difference is that misogyny and incel are NOT mutually inclusive. A misogynist can be in a relationship but an incel isn't/can't - hence the rage.

Within the group of "misogynists" there is a group called "incel." It's not a Venn diagram so much as a 2-dimensional doughnut. No part of "incel" hangs outside the misogynist circle.

I don't see how. Anyone identifying as incel is upset because they think women owe them sex. That's textbook misogyny.

Yes. Not all misogynists are incel (who are far more "radicalized," angry and purely hateful) but all incel are misogynists.

There is a bit of a difference though. It's one thing to be a misogynist, it's quite another to find a like-minded tribe to validate whatever sick thoughts you are having and openly encourage you to act on them. This is not the same old same old, it's amplified

We need to reject the term outright as an attempt by those who embrace it to paint themselves as victims.

This seems very different. I am 70, have lived through equality issues , but organizing with a name, celebrating death, rape and abuse was not encouraged or emboldened.
