That is: there are mainstream political figures and their audiences who know of the existence of libertarians, but who encounter very little in the way of actual content from or interactions with libertarians.

Libertarians are in a weird position where we're prominent enough to get attacked by name but not prominent enough that it's obvious to most when those attacks are easily contradicted by our record. I think this might partly explain the "why are libts silent about X?!" trope.

Libts rightly get irate when it's claimed we haven't talked about, e.g., police/CJ issues for decades (often far ahead of Dems). But if you're a normal political news consumer that doesn't particularly follow libts, it's easy to get impression that's coming only from the left.

Combine awareness of the existence of libertarians with the lack of actually seeing much from libertarians, and you can easily wind up with bad "why aren't libertarians talking about this?!" takes on pretty much any issue.

And to be sure, there are lots of intra-libertarian debates about emphasis and messaging and the legacy of fusionism on the brand's perception. All good things to hash out. But I don't think that's even on the radar for most outsiders.

It's not that they follow and are taking a side on our internal debates on prioritizing deregulation vs. civil liberties, etc. It's that they see 100 lefty takes on civil liberties and no or few libertarian ones *even if* it is a substantial chunk of total libertarian output.

That doesn't excuse their inability to google it before firing off a denunciation that totally misses the mark, but I think it is part of the dynamic that explains what's going on.

Maybe the problem is that there seem to be many who call themselves libertarians because they don’t want someone/govt to tell them what to do or not do but are fine with using govt to tell other people what to do or not do. Oversimplification but this is Twitter.

Very True but the majority of the country is hypocrites these days so it’s not unique to libertarians. Fight racism with racism. Fight discrimination with discrimination. Fight govt force with govt force. Say corporations are evil but praise them when they bow to your demands
