Interestingly, the other setting would be correct for Unix as by default, the termios driver translates LF to CR, LF when writing data to the terminal. This can be configured with “stty onlcr.”

Using just LF to denote new lines was a conscious and novel choice back then. It wasn't just what the hardware expected. Unix was developed on ASR-33 teletypes which required a CR-LF line ending, too. Having the terminal driver translate this was clever design back then.

I still think it's interesting how even on old teletype machines, there was an option for the operator to dynamically switch between the two. In a way that machine is more flexible
