Highlights from this morning’s Inter-American Development Bank’s Conference on Digital Transformation in Jamaica.

(3/3) As your Prime Minister, I have a duty to address and debunk such falsehoods. The convenience and practicality of the new notes for making payments are evident. Therefore, it would be nonsensical to invest in their implementation and then suddenly decide to remove them.

(2/3) I must express my worry about the spread of misinformation, especially by people who should know better, and the number of people who seem to believe these rumours. It raises concerns about the kind of information Jamaicans are consuming.

(1/3) I recently came across some concerns circulating on the internet, even among my good friend, the Leader of the Opposition, regarding digital payments. Let me clarify that the government has no intention of removing cash, meaning paper money, from our system.

Today I sat with 10-year-old Nathaniel and 6-year-old Ari as they led me through how they used their assistive learning devices and it was truly a pleasure to see how immersed they were.

Learning for children with disabilities has become even more accessible with hearing and visually-impaired children being able to access reading materials on their tablets and devices complete with voice-over reading and sign language!

(4/4) Using the device, Ari read a book in his language, Jamaican Sign Language. This milestone represents a significant step towards inclusivity, allowing children like Ari to fully immerse themselves in learning through materials that resonate with their unique experiences.

, where we witnessed a remarkable demonstration by young Ari, a 6-year-old student who is hearing-impaired, showcasing the newfound potential that the accessible digital textbooks offer.

(4/5) Yesterday, I met with Aunty Pat and we discussed her invaluable contributions to music and the performing arts, nurturing aspiring talents and guiding them on their paths to success.

(2/5) Through her radio show, she became a beacon of hope and inspiration, nurturing young minds and instilling the importance of dental hygiene and education.

(1/5) I like many Jamaicans grew up listening to Patricia 'Aunty Pat' Gooden on the popular radio programme 'Colgate Cavity Fighter's Club,' where she graced the airwaves for an astounding 26 years.

The objective is that every Jamaican will be able to fairly and equitably access digital services and make digital payments should they need to.

No Jamaican will be left behind as we undergo our own digital transformation. We will proceed with the understanding that in many rural communities in Jamaica, cash is still the primary means of payment, and it is what people are accustomed to.

At the same time we are acutely aware of the need to patiently guide our senior citizens and other members of our society in this direction, while ensuring systems that do not place them at a disadvantage.

The world is changing every day with new technology and new ways of doing business to increase efficiency and effectiveness. We must therefore embrace the inevitability of technology and empower our people to utilize it.

This government does not intend for its citizens to be left behind in the digital revolution. We will educate, sensitize and pilot our people through the effective use of technology to improve their lives.

(4/4) We must understand that this course of action will not only undermine our shared values and society, but also threaten the very foundation of our civilization.

(3/4) Some individuals who had the opportunity to make a difference within the system have failed, and now, with the aid of social media, they contribute to the spreading of misinformation and lies.
