A really fantastic thread here by @TheFrontalLobe_ , a beautiful example of how science publication, data sharing, and collaboration should work. I strongly encourage you to read the whole thing:https://twitter.com/TheFrontalLobe_/status/1021730368922234880 …

The science is awesome, but I want to take a moment to highlight the level of vision, creativity, idealism, altruism, and risk-tolerance coming from these early-career researchers:https://twitter.com/TheFrontalLobe_/status/1021733954662088705 …

15/ These experiments took the combined efforts of at least 10 people. Each person you see on the author list contributed decisively and I'm grateful to every one of them. @glopesdev @taunbot @KampffLab @Phillips_M_G (the others are not on twitter!)

There's a common (and correct) sentiment that our current system of sharing ideas/results/data/code needs improvement, but it's too risky for most of us to stray too far outside existing norms. Changing norms have to come from established scientists...https://twitter.com/dannyjnwong/status/1019811010209861632 …

This needs to be led from established, tenured professors with less fear of the implications to their careers due to not publishing in high impact factor journals. Also, existing preprint repositories might do well to incorporate these peer review features to facilitate uptake.

...but most established scientists are caught in a bind. They can tolerate risk, but what about their students and postdocs?https://twitter.com/NicoPC131/status/966231526076796928 …

Even though this is probably, in this form or another, the future of scientific publishing, how do you feel about the risk taken by your students/postdocs to publish outside the traditional system ?

          Andrew York Retweeted Jack Gallant

In a perfect world, we'd freely share ideas/results/data/code immediately, but our system of incentives strongly discourages that:https://twitter.com/gallantlab/status/1016944762912305153 …

Again we all agree that the data should be released. The question is when. Immediate release has negative repercussions for the students who collected it and disincentivizes large studies. There is no perfect solution.

Re-imagine scientific publishing. What would you change? My answer: No paywall, no delay, straight to the web. Open data, open code, interactive/animated figures. Transparent, rolling peer review, version control, CCBY license, citable DOIs. See it here: https://andrewgyork.github.io/

The most important question! Easy for me to answer: I don't have postdocs or grad students, only "staff scientists" (permanent employees). This makes it much easier to take professional risks, like publishing in an unusual way.

And THAT'S why I'm so impressed by this work. They don't have tenure. They don't have their own labs. They don't have any promises about the future. And they're trusting the rest of us, inviting us into their data, because it's *the right thing to do*.https://twitter.com/TheFrontalLobe_/status/1021733575077634049 …

14/ You can use the #GitHub repo to suggest new experiments, propose new analyses and even contribute them yourself, or comment on other people's suggestions. #neuroscience is hard. We need your help to make sense of all this.

The thing is you have to convince the academic institutions to consider these platforms when judging promotions. Otherwise researchers will fear publishing like this
