So it is real! My first book from CUP is (was) officially out, which discusses the long-standing philosophical issues concerning the use of mathematics in evolutionary biology. The book critically overviews the existing discussions (Sober, Brandon, Matthen, Ariew...), and

All in all, if you're interested in social epistemology, the social organization of science, or cultural evolution, the paper is worth a read.

Lastly, the link between payoff opacity and conformity is important. Though the authors focus on negative implications (climate change), the import for cultural evolution seemed clear (which is somewhat more positive) though might require what they call 'experimentation'.

Third, the exploration of parameters (network structure, conformity strength, payoffs) is fascinating. While the strong link between network structure and polarization was not unexpected, it was lovely to see if fall out of the model so clearly.

Second, the expansion of the Bala & Goyal/Zollman framework to incorporate a conformity incentive was super cool. As they note later, it opens up the possibility of strategic play that pits coordination against personal-payoffs.

First, it's motivated by some nice examples in the history of science, with philosophy-of-science-case-study favorite Semmelweis being deployed for a novel purpose.

I have a new paper out that looks at how women's social networks change when the households and communities they live in become more market dependent

This paper looks very good and, based on Andrew's summary of its contents below, quite correct. Not going to resist the opportunity to self-promote and link to a piece where Ford Doolittle and I make points in a similar vein, though much less detail:

Along the way, I discuss the evolution of the turtle carapace, non-genetic inheritance in dung beetles, and coat color in beach mice. So even if you don't agree with the paper, you might learn some cool facts. 7/8

I don't end with either a positive or negative appraisal of the EES--I'm leaving that for future scientific and philosophical work--but close by suggesting that rhetoric on both sides has hampered reflection on the substantive empirical issues at stake. 6/8
