hey, I'm writing a post on the failure of Stored Procedures as a platform. What, in your view, were the reasons they didn't work out?

It's not clear to me that they have failed. They may fail as CPU becomes the bottleneck in RDBMSs, though.

VoltDB only uses stored procedures because CPU/mem latency is bottleneck. Developers don't like SPs, but they retain significant advantages.

One additional advantage is ability to retry in case of deadlocks. Wound/Wait style deadlock "avoidance" / retries are powerful.
