OH: "PostgreSQL is the Linux of databases" It's probably equally unstoppable and will completely dominate the database ecosystem in the next 10-20 years. What's your opinion on this?

AFAIK
@PostgreSQL is the RDBMS with most implemented SQL standarts. It makes so many complex things easy on the SQL side. Basically I think@PostgreSQL is the best choice for complex queries and big data.1 reply 7 retweets 32 likes -

Huh, the optimiser isn't as good (yet) as others, though. Ease of writing SQL != Ease of executing SQL...

Is that really generally true? Usually I find it smarter and faster than the competition.

A few examples: 1) Not enough join elimination last time I checked 2) Try 20 joins. No problemo for Oracle. Bye bye with PG 3) Have you encountered a plan like the below in PG?pic.twitter.com/76TTqhMLVx

Not that the underlying queries are a good idea, but yes, I've seen plans like that in postgres. In fact, some issues with them lead me to propose some of m first few changes to postgres (around 8.2 maybe?). And geqo was updated to better handle them.

That's not to say there's not some plan quality issues around geqo. And that we couldn't do a better job around star join type queries.
