I've not seen that function before, but it seems quite risky if you read the "bugs and caveats" because there is still a global shared state.

Yea, it's not perfect. But it works reasonably well in production.

(And a lot of the caveats are pretty fundamental for *any* in-process solution. E.g. fds numbers will always be shared etc)
