I have very poorly defined fingerprints, so scanners very rarely work for me. I can't use the scanners in phones, but that's a pretty minor inconvenience. The big problem is immigration checkpoints, over the years the problem has got worse as more of the checking is automated.

A well-known trick for people like me is rubbing beeswax on your fingers, it can make the machines happier. They usually have some at customs but didn't today - so I got stuck in secondary screening

Does anyone know if the beeswax trick works after you've been climbing? my fingerprints are unrecognizable for about 2 days after going to the gym...

Have the same problem. A few years back I went bouldering, and then tried to pick up my US work visa in a US embassy the next day. Took like 20min for them to take a fingerprint that they considered sufficient. Lots of joking around about me having filed them off and such.
