I have to agree. I think that having an expedited review process for small changes (definition TBD) makes sense, but having multiple streams into the codebase would be a major headache.

there is no need to actually to that to contribute though, is it? I mean, you'll need to cherry pick and read some (through our archives ,or some other aggregate site), but you don't need to actually subscribe with full mail delivery.

Well, then every email of such a casual contributor will get delayed. Sure, they could subscribe, and then disable delivery. But that's a somewhat arcane process.

That is indeed the problem, not the mailing list per se. Having an archive is nice, and the ability to answer in detail. But getting overwhelmed with hundreds of emails per day makes people unsubscribe again.
