Now if only Postgres would solve the fact everyone has to run a connection pooling proxy. Connection pooling and XID are probably the 2 biggest universally wide pains around Postgres.

Not 100% convinced on connection pooling. Lots and lots of application servers have it all built in, not to mention stateful apps.

That doesn't address the issue that if you have a relevant number of application servers for even a medium sized application, all the pooled connections from the app server are going to cause pain / slowdown on the PG server side.

You really need a pool in the app server to reduce the latency penalty (adding a few ms of DB connection startup for a new web request isn't OK), and a transparent pooler in front of the database to handle that many connections.
