To be clear, there's still just the venerable heap storage built into postgres. But within some constraints, new types of table storage can now be added without modifying core postgres. Off to do some mop-up work now ;)

Any thoughts on the TID restriction?

I think it's doable to change that, albeit not for v12. But it's not a project I forsee to tackle myself for v13 - I worked on tableam to allow zheap, which has compatible tids. The necessary changes for tables etc aren't actual that big. It's indexes that are problematic.
