Students are turning last week’s heartbreaking school shooting in Parkland, Florida, into an inspiring push for change. Know your rights when protesting. Didn't ACLU essentially argue against being able to prevent access to guns in cases like this? https://www.aclu.org/blog/disability-rights/gun-control-laws-should-be-fair … (regulation, initiated by Obama admin, was then struck down using the CRA)

Did you even read it? "ACLU is not opposed to gun control laws." The think this *particular* law is unconstitutional. Besides, even if they were completely against gun control, they can still support the right to protest.

Yes, I read it. Being able to withhold guns from people like the perpetrator of the recent shooting seems worthwhile. And not too great a threat to the 2A (you can argue with the details of implementation). There's balancing issues around nearly all rights, including around 2A.

Read it again. It's about enrolling Social Security recipients who are severely mentally ill to the point that they have someone else manage their benefits into the database. Not relevant at all to the Florida school shooting.

It's primarily about the posture about regulation / laws in the space. Many of the same arguments apply for other efforts to prevent access to guns without criminal conviction. We don't know whether it'd have applied to Florida shooting. Quite possibly not.

And it would possibly, if I understand correctly which might certainly not be the case, apply for invocations of Florida's Baker Act (involuntary admission due to mental issues), as that can create social security eligibility.

A lot of the Republicans are touting GVROs as a solution, and they'd largely run into the same constitutional issues you referred to in this thread.

Not the same at all. There's no sweeping registering of a wide swath of people, there should be burden of proof of violence, etc. We can do this without overly infringing on any rights.
