columnists write under their own bylines (eg David Brooks). ed board writers write under the name of "the editorial board." I imagine, though I cannot be sure, that the fact that Norton had been hired to speak for the institutional voice of the Times played a part in her firing.

The fact that basically nobody understands these distinctions apart from editorial page writers (I didn't, until I wrote for an editorial page for a few months!) is a real problem that newspapers will have to grapple with

Starting to believe that it's self inflicted to an unnecessary degree. The fact that neither nyt nor wapo have a decent explainer on their website explaining how all this works imo is astonishing. There'd still be a lot of people not reading or believing, but there'd be a chance.

Unless you're in/around journalism, or a reader that reads enough to have hints form a picture, the only way a young person could learn difference is in school or parents.
