In the last week, three much-criticized district court nominees -- Petersen, Talley, and Mateer -- have withdrawn from consideration. I know it's uncool to suggest there are still some checks and balances on the executive branch, but that seems worth noting.

Under the circumstances, "okay, there are non-zero checks, but they're not nearly as strong as they should be and the sky is still falling" is a response I'll accept.

But was it really "proper" checks and balances? Talley and Mateer got through the committee hearing with all R votes IIRC. My reading is that the pushback only started after them being voted out of committee caused a bigger reaction than usual.

Seems more a case of journalists and voters calling senators serving as a check, rather than inter-branch checks.
