This kind of presumes that people raising issues aren't aware of that. But for now norms around abuse of office aren't holding, so temporarily relief is sought via other, possibly more rigid, avenues. https://twitter.com/pwnallthethings/status/941168739139145728 …

Sure, without a D house majority or bigger revelations nothing's going to happen WRT impeachment. But that doesn't mean pointing individual violations is naive. And I think that's a pretty significant subtext of this, and some related, threads.

Not naive, but losing sight of the true nature of problem and solution--namely, political (Congress) not legal (courts). Imo, collusion good example. My sense: Many now see issue thru legal lens. I feel like this is mistake.

Well, that'd probably fly less badly if Congress didn't squander any sort of trust... I generally agree. Pwn's tone in this is just rubbing me a bit the wrong way.

Not "less badly"--political solution is the primary way this should fly. But I agree lack of trust is a problem for Congress. Hyper-partisanship problem as well.

It's fairly evident that it's not for the next year though. IMO neither lawmakers, nor NGOs, nor journalists, nor citizens can really be faulted looking for alternative, intentionally existing!, backstops to stop the worst.

I don't blame them--I feel myself yearning for legal solution as well--mainly because political approach fraught and Rs are morally lost imo. But important to remind one's self: nature and solution political.

Even assuming the GOP re-found its soul: All the realistic political solutions have incredibly long lead times. 2018 is ways off. A president without congressional support can do plenty damage. Impeachment will/would take a good while. Efforts to limit damage seem required.

Will probably be killed for this a couple years^Wminutes down the line: While I think that impeachment hearings would possibly be a good idea, my estimate of the damage of an actual impeachment & conviction in comparison to 3 more years of this admin varies daily.
