Meh. Make edit history public and allow linking to individual revisions, but with a link to the history.

Perhaps even addressing precisely what happened in the linked tweet, namely showing the name of the retweeted person at the time of the subtweet.

And have a very short time interval for the tweet to be editable. Not more than 60 seconds. Allows for quick "oh crap, I misspelled that word/used the wrong word" fixes, but still makes it difficult to pull off real mischief

No, I don't like that. One of the big problems imo are tweets by well intended people that are shared widely. Not being able to circulate a correction the same way isn't good.
