conversely, if someone has zero earned income (only investment income), and finagles their way to paying zero taxes, they don't vote? seems harsh, but i dunno, maybe there's something to it

So poor people suddenly don't get to vote anymore? Or have to proof they're poor? Dangerous IMO. The large influence of rich people in US politics imo isn't driven by their actual votes, but by the influence their money can get.

If income is below the standard deduction etc you don't. You effectively can have a *negative* federal tax rate due to tax credits like EITC. That's good. But it's also can be exploited by shifting all your income to corporations and whatnot.
