How much of that is difference in population density? The US is much less densely populated than Europe. It's much cheaper to provide access to dense areas.
Also, is there actually good data for the magnitude of issues, allowing comparison between Europe and US? The problems so far seem to have been more within parts of various service providers networks in Europe. Also, given that there haven't been as many lockdowns in the US...
I don't think those numbers are particularly sensible - they only get close to making sense if you add all of Russia (i.e. including Siberia) to Europe. US: 36 / km, Northern Europe: 62, Southern Europe: 118, Western Europe: 180 See page 14 and following https://population.un.org/wpp/Publications/Files/WPP2019_DataBooklet.pdf …
If you look at the Eastern Europe section that includes all of Russia, not just the European part (which has a population density of ~27 / km2, vs all of Russia at 8.4). WP lists Europe as "density72.9/km2 (188/sq mi) (2nd)" and US as "87/sq mi (33.6/km2) (146th)".
You make good points and I agree that Europe is probably denser than the US to a greater degree than the rough cut google answer. But tough to say what apples to apples. Prolly should exclude Alaska then. And should we compare Western Europe to the northeast (and not whole US)?
I agree that the "real" difference is smaller than comparing e.g. Western Europe to the US (obviously deserts don't need that much internet). But there's still a very big difference. There's much much more suburbia and larger loosely populated areas here in the US.
