If you look at the Eastern Europe section that includes all of Russia, not just the European part (which has a population density of ~27 / km2, vs all of Russia at 8.4). WP lists Europe as "density72.9/km2 (188/sq mi) (2nd)" and US as "87/sq mi (33.6/km2) (146th)".
You make good points and I agree that Europe is probably denser than the US to a greater degree than the rough cut google answer. But tough to say what apples to apples. Prolly should exclude Alaska then. And should we compare Western Europe to the northeast (and not whole US)?
