The Indian government has apparently approved Lopinavir/Ritonavir as an emergency treatment for serious cases of death sniffles. That’s the same stuff some people want to trial at 50 hospitals here (alongside chloroquine).

If it turns out this drug combo is effective at preserving the lives of the vulnerable, and assuming we can ramp up stocks to sufficient levels, wouldn’t that mean we can all go back to work and the worst risk will be us healthy people might get sick for a week or two?

That depends a lot on the efficacy, no? There's a huge difference between moderating worst case in 20% of cases and fully curing in 95%. The cumulative side-effects of needing to treat hundreds of millions of people with those drugs aren't to sneeze at either.

There's a good number of side effects, and a lot of bad interactions for Lopinavir / Ritonavir: https://www.accessdata.fda.gov/drugsatfda_docs/label/2016/207407Orig1s000lbl.pdf …
